Urgent calls are made when a message concerns the safety of a ship, aircraft or other vehicle or the safety of a person.
 
The words used are "PAN, PAN," repeated three times on channel 16 (2182 kHz) preceding the message.
 
SAFETY
 
Safety calls are made concerning the safety of navigation or when giving important meteorological warnings.
 
The word used is "SECURITY (pronounced SAY-CUR-EE-TAY) repeated three time on channel 16 (2182 kHz) preceding the message.
